Misconceptions

The myths surrounding creative roles—like the glamorized lifestyle, the idea that it’s all aesthetic fun, or that credit is fairly given. We’ll discuss the lack of recognition, unrealistic expectations about schedules, the absence of proper support systems, and how “people” (clients, brands, even collaborators) often misunderstand the job entirely.

Rakel Sanchez

(Fashion Designer & Stylist)

Q: What surprised you most about the job?
The workload. Especially with unpaid collabs. There's also way too much ego in selecting designers—it's often not about talent, but clout.

"

deal with being told my work is “just drawing a picture.” It’s nothing like The Devil Wears Prada.

Q: What’s the biggest myth about your job?
That it's all glam. It's not. Creativity is hard. Showrooms aren’t easy. I’ve had to cross cities, spend my own money, and deal with being told my work is “just drawing a picture.” It’s nothing like The Devil Wears Prada.

Camila Villegas

(Owner and Founder of the clothing brand Drimia)

Q: Has anyone ever told you, “Your job looks so easy”?
Yes—and it still makes me laugh. Someone once said, “Oh, so you just take pictures and post them on Instagram, right?”

And no, it’s not like that. Behind every photo there are months of work: product development, pattern making, samples, testing, fabric selection, campaign planning, creative direction, digital strategy, launches, logistics...

And that’s without mentioning the emotional pressure of running a brand that connects with so many people. Making something look easy is, paradoxically, the hardest part.

Q: What’s the biggest myth about this job that you’d like to debunk?
That starting your own business—especially in fashion—gives you total freedom. A lot of people think being your own boss means you can manage your time however you want, but the truth is you end up working twice as much.

There are no fixed hours, no real downtime. You’re always thinking: how to improve, how to grow, how to solve problems, how to make payroll, how to meet production deadlines...

Freedom does come, but only after a lot of structure, sacrifice, and building a solid system.

Gustavo Quiceno

(Art Director)

Q: What’s surprised you the most about this profession?
How deep the connections can get in just one shoot. You end up bonding with people who, without meaning to, become long-lasting friends.
Working under pressure and solving things together creates a kind of connection that’s hard to find in other settings.
